The Vegetables of Wassamu

~Blog by Akane~

It’s been hot until about a week ago, but finally, it’s getting cold.

One of the major agricultural products of Wassamu are pumpkins, and they are now all harvested and are in the drying process. I saw many people in the farms a week ago who were harvesting pumpkins. It’s been the busiest time of the year for the farmers. They sleep less hours and keep working from early morning to the evening, in the season like now, and they are very tired.

Sometimes, farmers leave their tractors or pumpkins gathered in outside, just too exhausted to carry them into their storehouse. And what happens is that the crops or the vehicle get stolen. Surely Japan is considered to be one of the safest places in the world when it comes to theft and such crimes, yet it’s not good to leave things outside…

Wassamu needs to be careful not to have traffic accident and theft, especially during this time of the year. Traffic accidents are caused by the lack of attention because they are tired from days of harvesting works. Theft, because crops can be stolen sometimes if kept unattended.

In Hokkaido, theft of agricultural crops can happen in broad daylight, using a huge combine harvester and a heavy-duty truck to carry the stolen products. It can be wheat, cattle food hay-rolls, and of course, rice. The farmers who got stolen their rice once said they didn’t get suspicious since their neighbours harvesting their crops was rather a common thing when harvesting gets to its busiest stage. They even thought “Oh, so kind of them! They’re helping my harvest.” when they were getting stolen… The police tell the farmers around that if they see anyone who they don’t know entering their farms, they should be extra careful and stop them if suspicious.

Our farm also yielded a large quantity of tomatoes, courgettes, corns, soy beans, water melons, peppers, okras, aubergines and millet. My stomach can consume only limited amount of these vegetables each day, so when there were too much of them, I went to give some to my parents and relatives. I’ve cooked tomatoes in all ways possible. Spaghetti pomodoro, pizza toast, tomato salad with green leaves, tomato and cucumber sandwiches, tomato soup, tomato curry, etc… When I couldn’t finish them, so I made tomato puree to decrease their volume, and put them into my freezer. Now, my freezer is full of tomato puree and cold pepper shreds in freezer bags.

A day's harvest. About 10 kg of tomatoes.

Now, I can enjoy peppers and tomatoes in the coming cold season for a while… How luxurious…!

Tomatoes turned into a freezer bag of puree. Compact.

The life in Wassamu with fresh summer vegetables continues. Soon, I’ll need to buy a cheap and effective kerosene stove for my house.

See you soon!
